Deaf School: Get Set Ready Go
Formed in Liverpool in 1974, Deaf School still occasionally play the odd gig here and there and have a devoted, almost cult-like following to this very day. Between 1976 and 1978 they recorded three studio albums with Warner Brothers before splitting up. The track I’ve chosen, “Get Set Ready Go” is from their debut release, “2nd Honeymoon”.
Now, there are a couple of Deaf School related facts which, if they ever crop-up in a pub quiz, you’ll thank me for and, if you know me, then you’ll understand why they warrant a mention.
Deaf School’s female vocalist, who went by the stage name “Bette Bright” (real name, Anne McPherson, née Martin) is married to Graham McPherson, better known as “Suggs” from Madness. They tied the knot in 1981 and have two daughters, Scarlett and Viva.
They met through a mutual friend, Clive Langer, who just happened to be one of Deaf School’s guitarists. After Deaf School split-up, Langer ventured into music production and ultimately became one of the 80s most successful producers, working with artists like David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dexys Midnight Runners, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, Morrissey, and you’ve guessed it, Madness.
Anyway, I urge you to check Deaf School out in more depth on Spotify, or your preferred music streaming service. They are most definitely worth a listen.
